Arijit Singh’s Voice Shapes a Generation of Indian Music

Entertainment, Jan 28: Arijit Singh emerged as one of the most influential voices in contemporary Indian music, shaping Bollywood’s soundscape for more than a decade with songs that connected deeply with listeners across age groups and languages.

His career reached a defining moment with Tum Hi Ho from Aashiqui 2 (2013), which firmly established him as a leading playback singer. From that breakthrough, Singh’s repertoire expanded with compositions centred on heartbreak, longing and quiet resilience. Songs such as Agar Tum Saath Ho (Tamasha, 2015) and Channa Mereya (Ae Dil Hai Mushkil, 2016) stood out for their emotional restraint and depth, becoming benchmarks for modern Bollywood ballads.

Singh also demonstrated versatility beyond melancholic romance. Upbeat tracks like Nashe Si Chadh Gayi (Befikre, 2016) highlighted his ease with mainstream pop sounds, while romantic melodies such as Raabta (Agent Vinod, 2012) and Main Tenu Samjhawan Ki (Humpty Sharma Ki Dulhania, 2014) reinforced his dominance in love songs. His continued relevance was evident in later hits including Kesariya (Brahmastra, 2022) and Apna Bana Le, which resonated strongly with newer audiences.

One of his most discussed recent releases was Ghar Kab Aaoge from Border 2, a reimagined track composed by Mithoon. The song blended original lines by Javed Akhtar with new lyrics by Manoj Muntashir Shukla and brought together voices from different generations, including Sonu Nigam, Roopkumar Rathod, Vishal Mishra and Diljit Dosanjh alongside Singh. The collaboration leaned heavily on nostalgia while retaining contemporary appeal.

Beyond Hindi cinema, Singh sang extensively in Bengali, Telugu, Tamil and Marathi films, enhancing his reputation as a versatile, pan-Indian artist. His body of work spanned romantic ballads, devotional numbers and patriotic compositions, including Maatrubhumi from Battle of Galwan (2026), composed by Himesh Reshammiya.

On January 27, Singh announced that he would stop accepting new playback assignments. In a social media post, he thanked listeners for their continued support and described his career as a “wonderful journey.” The announcement prompted fans to revisit his extensive catalogue, much of which continues to define themes of love, loss and emotional expression in Indian cinema.

As audiences reflect on his music, Arijit Singh’s legacy stands marked by consistency, emotional honesty and a wide-reaching cultural impact, ensuring his voice remains a lasting presence in Indian film music.
