Guwahati: Barely two months after the Opposition alliance Asom Sonmilito Morcha (ASM) announced a united fight against the ruling NDA in the forthcoming Assam Assembly elections, signs of discord have surfaced within the bloc. The rift became evident on Wednesday after the Communist Party of India (CPI), a constituent of the Morcha, declared its decision to contest the elections independently in seven Assembly constituencies.
The CPI announced that it would field candidates in Sivasagar, Nazira, Titabar, Morigaon, Dhakuakhana, Demow and Gauripur. Proposed candidates include Bishwajit Saikia (Titabar), Dhiren Kachari (Dhakuakhana), Sheikh Mansoor Rahman (Gauripur), Sapan Deka (Morigaon), Krishna Gogoi (Demow) and Kanak Gogoi (Nazira). In Sivasagar, four names—Subhasini Barua, Satyendra Gogoi, Adan Barua and Anup Gogoi—are under consideration.

CPI state secretary Kanak Gogoi said the names were recommended by district units and would be finalised after the Election Commission announces the poll schedule. Explaining the decision, he cited a lack of response from the Congress on seat-sharing talks. According to Gogoi, the CPI had formally demanded seven seats on January 2, following a party meeting held in Sivasagar on December 20, but received no reply.
He expressed displeasure over reports that the Congress held discussions with other Morcha partners while questioning the CPI’s relevance. Although Gogoi said the party remains open to adjustments if consensus is reached, he asserted that the CPI is prepared to contest alone if necessary. The CPI was among the seven parties that revived the ASM in November 2025, but the latest development has raised serious questions about the alliance’s unity ahead of the elections.
