Guwahati, Feb 2: Guwahati witnessed another police encounter on February 1 after one of the accused in a recent dacoity case was injured while attempting to flee from police custody under the jurisdiction of Basistha Police Station. The incident led to brief tension in the locality before the situation was brought under control.
According to police officials, three individuals had been arrested in connection with a robbery reported from the Beltola area. While the accused were being escorted by the police, one of them suddenly tried to escape. Police personnel opened fire in self-defence to prevent his escape, during which the accused sustained a gunshot injury.
The injured accused was immediately taken to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital for treatment. Police said his condition is stable and he remains under medical supervision.
Investigators said the trio was involved in a dacoity carried out on January 30 at Nirupama Enclave, Block A and B, on Chilarai Path in Beltola. The gang allegedly broke into multiple flats, forcing open doors and looting valuable household items. They are also suspected to have attempted thefts in other apartments within the same residential complex.
Police said the accused entered the premises with their faces covered in black cloth and were armed with sticks and other weapons. Exploiting the absence of residents, they targeted the homes of two individuals identified as Dibya Nath and Monomaya.
Following the arrests, police recovered a substantial quantity of stolen articles from the accused. Further investigation is underway to ascertain whether the gang was involved in similar robbery incidents in other parts of Guwahati.
