Rs 14 Crore Drug Haul Seized in Cachar, One Arrested in Joint Operation

Guwahati, Feb 6: Security agencies have dealt a major blow to narcotics trafficking in Assam’s Cachar district with the arrest of one person and the seizure of drugs worth an estimated Rs 14 crore during a coordinated operation, Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma said.

The joint action was carried out by Cachar Police and the Assam Rifles in the Tolengram area, which officials identified as a key corridor used by drug traffickers. Highlighting the scale of the recovery, the chief minister took to social media platform X to commend the forces for what he described as a significant crackdown on peddlers operating in the region.

According to information shared by Sarma, the operation led to the recovery of 154 soap cases containing heroin along with 10,000 Yaba tablets from the possession of the arrested individual. Yaba, a synthetic drug containing methamphetamine, is banned in India and has been a growing concern for law enforcement agencies due to its cross-border trafficking links.

Officials said the seizure reflects the sustained efforts by security forces to dismantle drug networks in southern Assam, particularly along vulnerable routes used for smuggling. They added that further investigation is underway to trace the wider network involved and that additional follow-up operations are expected as part of the intensified anti-narcotics drive in the region.
