AASU to Hold Statewide Candlelight Processions for Zubeen Garg on October 29

GUWAHATI: The All Assam Students’ Union (AASU) will organise candlelight processions at district headquarters across Assam on October 29, demanding justice in singer Zubeen Garg’s death case and seeking the cancellation of bail granted to two accused.

AASU president Utpal Sarma said public anger over the delay in delivering justice had persisted despite a decline in street protests after day-to-day hearings began in the fast-track court. He urged participants to ensure that the demonstrations remained peaceful, non-violent and democratic.

Sarma said the people of Assam had continued to demand strict punishment for those responsible for Garg’s death, which Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma had described as murder. He expressed concern over the passage of a year without justice and the successive grant of bail to accused persons.

He stressed that the accused could be convicted only if the charges filed by the Special Investigation Team (SIT) were established in court. AASU, he said, would continue to press the government to ensure effective prosecution and prevent any negligence in the pursuit of justice.

Referring to statements by Assam Advocate General Devajit Saikia and the SIT chief about the possibility of approaching the Supreme Court, the AASU president called for the cancellation of bail granted to Amritprabha Mahanta and Sandipan Garg.

Sarma also appealed to the public to refrain from targeting Zubeen Garg’s widow, Garima Saikia Garg, on social media. He said she had suffered a profound personal loss and should be allowed to grieve without facing online attacks or speculation about her position in the case.

Expressing concern over derogatory comments directed at her, Sarma said circulating narratives intended to malign the character of a woman who had lost her husband was inhuman. He also drew attention to her physical and mental well-being following the loss.

AASU said its October 29 programme would renew public pressure for accountability while maintaining respect for democratic norms and the ongoing judicial process.
