Shillong, May 17: Technical education in Meghalaya is set for further expansion after the All India Council for Technical Education approved the introduction of diploma programmes in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering at Williamnagar Polytechnic in East Garo Hills district.
As per the AICTE Letter of Approval for the 2026–27 academic session, the government institution has received permission to launch the two diploma courses with an approved intake of 30 seats each.
The approval, issued on April 9, 2026, came under the AICTE process for new institutions and academic programmes. The institute, located at Samgonggre in Williamnagar, falls under the Eastern region and will be affiliated with the Meghalaya State Council for Technical Education in Shillong.
Meghalaya Chief Minister Conrad Sangma described the development as an important step towards strengthening technical education in the state.
“Happy to share that the AICTE has granted approval to Williamnagar Polytechnic to commence Diploma courses in Civil Engineering and Electrical Engineering,” Sangma said in a social media post.
He further stated that the initiative would create wider opportunities for young people to acquire skills, pursue careers and contribute to the state’s development.
Officials said the addition of the new programmes is expected to improve access to technical education in the Garo Hills region and reduce the need for students to move outside the area for diploma-level engineering studies.
The AICTE approval document also noted that an additional 10 per cent seats may be permitted beyond the sanctioned intake under provisions for reservation of Economically Weaker Sections (EWS), subject to state government policy.
According to the approval conditions, the sanction will remain valid for two years for the completion of affiliation procedures and admission-related formalities.
