AIUDF chief and Binnakandi MLA Badruddin Ajmal on Monday criticised a parliamentary panel’s recommendation to suspend, rather than remove, the Prime Minister and Chief Ministers if they remain in judicial custody for 30 days, alleging that the proposal would not ensure accountability among political leaders.
Reacting to the recommendation, Ajmal questioned the purpose behind the move and claimed that lawmakers would avoid framing laws that could eventually affect them.
“Who will punish whom? Tomorrow the punishment will fall on the same people who imparted the punishment,” Ajmal said.
Alleging that the political system protects its own interests, the AIUDF leader said no one in power would create laws that could be used against politicians. He also claimed that a significant number of parliamentarians have criminal cases against them.
“How many criminals are there in our Parliament today? More than 65 per cent of people are criminals,” Ajmal alleged.
Ajmal also targeted the BJP over the Uniform Civil Code (UCC), accusing the party of using the issue for electoral gains. He claimed that the UCC was being raised in view of upcoming elections.
“The BJP government will implement the UCC wherever it is in power. But nothing is going to happen,” he said, adding that the issue was being brought up as elections, including those in Uttar Pradesh, were approaching.
The AIUDF leader’s remarks came amid political discussions over the parliamentary panel’s recommendations concerning constitutional functionaries facing prolonged judicial custody and ongoing debates over the implementation of the Uniform Civil Code in BJP-ruled states.
