The All Naga Students’ Association, Manipur (ANSAM) on June 4 launched a march from Ukhrul district towards Makhan Naga Village in Kangpokpi district via Imphal, seeking to meet the families of six Naga youths allegedly abducted by armed militants on May 13.
Speaking to the media during the march, ANSAM leaders said the initiative was intended to express solidarity with the families of the missing persons and to press authorities to expedite efforts for their safe return.
The organisation stated that despite repeated appeals and the expiry of an ultimatum issued to the Manipur government and concerned authorities, no concrete information has been provided regarding the safety, whereabouts or status of the six individuals. ANSAM said the continued uncertainty has caused deep distress to both the families and the wider Naga community.
The students’ body warned that both the Government of Manipur and the Government of India would be held responsible for any untoward incident occurring during the course of the march along the Ukhrul–Imphal National Highway.
The protest follows resolutions adopted at an emergency assembly held in Ukhrul district headquarters on June 3, hosted by Tangkhul Katamnao Saklong (TKS). The meeting reviewed the situation and expressed dissatisfaction over the lack of progress in tracing the missing youths.
ANSAM said the assembly observed that the prolonged uncertainty has intensified the anguish of the families and prompted the decision to carry out the march to Makhan village to meet them directly. The organisation also indicated that further democratic protest measures may be adopted if authorities fail to provide information.
The six Naga youths were allegedly abducted from Leilon Vaiphei village on May 13, and their whereabouts remain unknown, prompting continued concern and calls for urgent intervention from civil society groups.
