UDALGURI-SONITPUR, Sept 19: Arun Garg, brother of late singer and cultural icon Zubeen Garg, attended a Zubeen Divas programme organised by the Rakshamari branch of Banyam Sanskritik Khetra, where children staged Joy Zubeen Da, a play based on the singer’s life and legacy.
Arun Garg inaugurated the programme by lighting the ceremonial lamp and later paid floral tribute before a portrait of Zubeen Garg. The play, staged at Rakshamari Community Hall, was described by the organisers as the first children’s play in Assam based on the singer’s life and legacy.
Addressing the gathering, Arun Garg said Zubeen would always remain with the people and expressed emotion at seeing children perform a play in his memory. He urged the children to give equal importance to education and move forward in their studies.
The programme was conducted under the guidance of Banyam Sanskritik Khetra Central Committee president Sanjoy Baruah, while Rakshamari branch president Amiyo Sasoni presided. More than 100 Nahor saplings were planted as part of the tribute to Zubeen Garg.
The programme featured a dance presentation by Nataraj Nrityangan, followed by musical and dance performances by children based on Zubeen Garg’s creations. The play was directed by playwright Sanjoy Baruah, with Dolly Das as assistant director, while theatre artistes Mridul Nath and Arun Nath supported the musical arrangements.
Certificates of appreciation were presented to the participating children at the end of the programme.
At a concluding press meet, Arun Garg recalled Zubeen Garg’s vision for the younger generation and said the singer had encouraged youths from tea garden communities to explore opportunities beyond tea garden work and engage in diverse fields and activities.
