Arunachal Minister Nyato Dukam Withdraws Remarks on 80:20 Reservation Ratio After AAPSU Protest

Arunachal Pradesh Minister Nyato Dukam has withdrawn his earlier remarks on the contentious 80:20 reservation ratio following strong objections from the All Arunachal Pradesh Students’ Union (AAPSU).

The move came after AAPSU criticised the minister’s comments as “immature and irresponsible” and sought an immediate clarification. The student body reiterated that scrapping the existing 80:20 reservation ratio remains one of its non-negotiable demands.

In a statement, AAPSU asserted that it would not accept any attempt to dilute its long-standing position on the issue and urged the state government to deal with concerns surrounding the reservation policy with due sensitivity.

Facing mounting criticism from the student organisation, Dukam subsequently withdrew his earlier remarks, marking a fresh development in the continuing debate over the state’s reservation framework.

The 80:20 reservation ratio has long remained a contentious socio-political issue in Arunachal Pradesh, attracting strong reactions from student organisations, civil society groups and political stakeholders. The matter continues to dominate public discourse as differing opinions persist over the future of the reservation policy.

Dukam’s decision to retract his remarks is expected to have an impact on the ongoing debate, while attention remains focused on the Arunachal Pradesh government’s next course of action on the reservation issue.
