The investigation into an alleged fake Indian currency network in Assam intensified after one of the two suspects arrested by Dispur Police sustained a bullet injury during a police operation in Guwahati in the early hours of Saturday, July 4.
The accused have been identified as Debojit Deori and Ajay Biswakarma, both residents of Deorigaon in Dhemaji district. They were taken into custody after police intercepted a Maruti Swift Dzire near Nagaland House in the Six Mile area under Dispur Police Station on July 2.
According to investigators, the operation was launched following specific intelligence inputs suggesting that the two men were travelling with counterfeit Indian currency. Police said an exchange of fire took place during a subsequent operation, during which Ajay Biswakarma suffered a gunshot wound to his right leg.
Biswakarma was immediately shifted to Gauhati Medical College and Hospital (GMCH), where he is undergoing treatment.
Preliminary interrogation reportedly revealed that both accused had allegedly been associated with similar activities in the past and are suspected to have links with a wider counterfeit currency network operating in the region.
During the search of the intercepted vehicle, police recovered a black backpack containing eight bundles of suspected fake Rs 500 notes. Officials said counterfeit currency with a face value of Rs 2,56,000 was seized along with other incriminating materials. The Maruti Swift Dzire used by the accused was also taken into police custody.
Meanwhile, the injured accused has allegedly claimed that certain police personnel were involved in the fake currency trade. The allegation has not been verified, and the authorities have not issued any official response regarding the claim.
Police said the investigation is continuing to trace the origin of the counterfeit notes and identify other individuals believed to be connected to the suspected racket.
