Assam Family Attacked During Shillong KSU Rally, Child Injured

Shillong, August 20: An Assam family travelling to Shillong was allegedly attacked during violence surrounding a Khasi Students’ Union (KSU) rally in the Meghalaya capital on Wednesday, leaving a child injured after shattered glass from their vandalised vehicle reportedly pierced him.

A video of the incident showed extensive damage to the car, including its windows, windscreen and rear glass. The child’s father said the family was travelling towards Shillong when their vehicle came under attack without warning.

The incident occurred amid clashes, assaults and vandalism reported at several locations during the KSU rally. Masked individuals were reportedly seen targeting passing vehicles, including private cars, government vehicles and vehicles bearing Assam registration plates. Some vehicles were allegedly set on fire.

Several people were reportedly injured in the violence, which triggered panic among motorists and pedestrians. Some individuals were allegedly heard raising pro-KSU slogans, though their identities and affiliations have not been independently established.

The reported targeting of Assam-registered vehicles has raised concerns among tourists, transport workers and commuters travelling between Assam and Meghalaya. Motor vehicle workers’ unions have condemned the alleged attacks and expressed concern over the safety of passengers and drivers.

Several videos of the incidents have surfaced, while authorities are examining the circumstances surrounding the violence and the identities of those responsible.
