The Assam government on Thursday announced plans to develop a world-class Aerotropolis around the Lokpriya Gopinath Bordoloi International Airport in Guwahati, aiming to create a major urban growth centre that will attract investment, generate employment and accelerate the state’s economic transformation.
Presenting the 2026-27 State Budget in the Assembly, Finance Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah said the proposed Aerotropolis will serve as the nucleus of a new satellite city, drawing inspiration from urban development models such as Noida, Gurugram and New Town Kolkata.
“Assam must create similar growth centres to unlock its full economic potential and provide opportunities for its youth,” the minister said.
Baruah noted that the proposed bridge over the Brahmaputra near the airport would further strengthen connectivity and support the development of the planned urban hub.
The project will be implemented by the Guwahati Satellite City Development Authority (GSCDA), a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) established by the Assam government.
The Finance Minister said the Aerotropolis would be a wholly government-owned initiative, ensuring that the benefits of the project accrue directly to the people of Assam.
The proposed satellite city will feature world-class infrastructure, industrial and commercial zones, and modern social amenities, with the objective of emerging as a major destination for investment and employment.
To expedite the project, the government has allocated ₹2,100 crore for land acquisition for the Satellite City Project.
Describing the initiative as a transformative step for Assam’s future, Baruah appealed for public support and cooperation to realise the vision of building a modern economic and urban growth centre around Guwahati.
