Udalguri-Sonitpur, June 11: Renowned Assamese music director, composer and singer Nibir Jyoti Kalita passed away unexpectedly at his residence in Guwahati on June 10 at around 11 am, leaving the state’s cultural fraternity and the people of his hometown, Dhekiajuli, in mourning.
Kalita, who had been residing permanently in Guwahati, was cremated at the Navagraha Crematorium later in the evening. News of his sudden demise has triggered an outpouring of grief among admirers, artists and residents of Dhekiajuli, where he was widely respected for his contributions to Assamese music.
Born in 1980, Kalita was known not only as a talented musician and vocalist but also for his academic excellence. He completed his early education at Dhekiajuli Nagar Nimna Buniyadi School and Dhekiajuli Higher Secondary School before pursuing higher studies at Darrang College in Tezpur, where he passed the Higher Secondary Examination with distinction. He later moved to Guwahati and completed a Bachelor of Computer Applications (BCA).
Following his studies, Kalita worked with reputed institutions, including HDFC and ICICI Bank. However, his passion for music remained central to his life, and he continued to make significant contributions to the Assamese entertainment industry.
Widely admired for his ability to render the songs of popular Assamese singer Zubeen Garg with remarkable precision and emotion, Kalita earned appreciation from audiences across the state. As a music director, he worked on several projects, including the Sadri film Temper and Assamese films such as Khawai and Jibonor Aror Jibon.
Despite his accomplishments, Kalita was known for his humility and simplicity and preferred to remain devoted to his craft rather than seek public recognition. Besides his musical career, he was also a successful entrepreneur and was associated with the management of canteens at Gauhati University and Arya College.
His death has been mourned by several organisations, including the environmental group Seuj Society, Kristi Sarathi Sangskritic Gosthi, Banyan Sangskritic Khetrya and numerous other cultural bodies and associations in Dhekiajuli.
Nibir Jyoti Kalita is survived by his father, brother, sister and other family members. His passing marks the loss of a distinguished figure in Assamese music, whose work and legacy will continue to be remembered by generations of music lovers.
