Guwahati, May 24: Amid growing concerns over theft and burglary cases reported from different parts of Assam, Basistha Police in Guwahati arrested two alleged repeat offenders suspected of involvement in a series of theft incidents across the city.
The accused were identified as Rocky Das from Jogighopa in Bongaigaon district and Rahul Choudhury, also known as Sonu Ali, from Bhella in Barpeta district. During the operation, police recovered a scooter allegedly used in carrying out theft activities along with several burglary tools and equipment from their possession.
According to police sources, the two individuals had allegedly been involved in theft activities in multiple areas of Guwahati for an extended period, mainly targeting residential neighbourhoods and other locations during late-night hours. Investigators suspect that they may be linked to several theft cases reported in and around the city in recent months.
Acting on specific intelligence inputs and after conducting surveillance, Basistha Police launched a special operation that led to the arrest of both accused. Officials said the seized items included tools commonly used for breaking locks and carrying out burglary operations.
Police sources stated that the accused are currently being questioned to determine possible links to other theft and property crime cases registered in Guwahati and nearby districts.
The arrests come at a time when incidents of theft, burglary and property-related crimes have raised concerns among residents in several parts of the state. In response, police departments have intensified night patrols, naka checking, surveillance and special drives aimed at curbing criminal activities.
Officials said strict action is being taken against repeat offenders and organised theft networks, while members of the public have also been urged to report suspicious activities promptly.
Further investigation into the matter is continuing.
