BJP Targets Assam Congress Over Leadership Choice, Backs UCC Bill and NDA Achievements

Guwahati, May 27: The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) launched a sharp attack on the Assam Congress over its recent selection of Legislative Party leader, alleging that the opposition party was drifting away from the interests of indigenous communities in the state.

Addressing a press conference in Guwahati, BJP Assam spokesperson Kishore Upadhyay claimed that the Congress leadership in Assam was increasingly giving preference to what he described as “Bengali-origin migrant Muslim interests” over the concerns of indigenous communities. According to him, the party’s latest organisational decision reflected a wider shift in its political direction.

Upadhyay alleged that the aspirations of indigenous people were being sidelined and claimed that the party’s political priorities had changed significantly.

While criticising the Congress, he also referred to former leaders including Fakhruddin Ali Ahmed, Moinul Hoque Choudhury and Devakanta Barua, alleging that previous Congress-era leadership had contributed to political and demographic changes in Assam. He further claimed that the current leadership was continuing along a similar path.

The BJP leader also made claims regarding the background of the newly selected Congress Legislative Party leader, alleging previous affiliations and political motivations behind changes in identity. These claims were made during the press conference and have not been independently verified.

Upadhyay further stated that the Congress’ latest move had exposed what he described as the future political direction of the party in Assam.

During the briefing, the BJP also welcomed the introduction of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC)-2026 Bill by the Assam government in the Legislative Assembly. He said the legislation represented a fulfilment of promises made by the government under the leadership of Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma.

According to Upadhyay, the proposed UCC drew inspiration from Article 44 of the Constitution and judicial developments related to the Shah Bano case and Shayara Bano case.

Commenting on 12 years of governance under Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Upadhyay highlighted measures including the abrogation of Article 370, implementation of GST, the Swachh Bharat Mission, expansion of digital payments through UPI, Ayushman Bharat, infrastructure projects and reforms in the defence sector as key achievements of the NDA government.
