Broken Glass, 3D Projections Feature in Agartala’s Durga Puja Themes

AGARTALA, Oct 11: From a pandal crafted with lakhs of broken glass pieces to 3D projections of Hindu deities and displays celebrating Tripura’s landmarks, Durga Puja organisers in Agartala are preparing distinctive themes to draw visitors during the festival.

The Kunjaban Sporting Union is designing its pandal using discarded glass pieces fitted into iron frames and illuminated with decorative lights. Tapas Paul, an artist from Siliguri in West Bengal, is overseeing the design.

Paul said the concept aims to challenge the idea that broken hopes mark the end of possibilities. The installation seeks to convey that shattered hopes, like broken glass, can be transformed into something meaningful and promising.

The puja committee has allocated around Rs 40 lakh for the project, its president, Sukanta Bhattacharjee, said.

Meanwhile, Aikatan Yuba Sangstha will use 3D projection technology to depict Goddess Durga defeating demons and Lord Shiva performing his cosmic dance of creation and destruction. The 10-minute show is expected to be a major attraction, said committee secretary Dip Dasgupta.

Shivnagar Modern Club will showcase 18 iconic structures of Tripura, including Ujjayanta Palace, the Unakoti archaeological site, Neer Mahal, Tripura Sundari Temple and Maharaja Bir Bikram Airport. Club president Pradip Kumar Ghosh said the display aims to familiarise visitors, particularly children, with the state’s cultural heritage and landmarks.

At Deshbandhu Chittaranjan Club, the theme will focus on Rajasthan’s traditions and culture. The pandal will resemble a royal palace, while a cultural troupe from Jaipur will perform in traditional attire with musical instruments, spokesperson Pradip Dey said.

Durga Puja, one of Tripura’s major festivals, will be celebrated from October 17 to 21 this year.
