Chowna Mein Proposes ‘Tawang Initiative’ to Build International Buddhist Tourism Circuit in Northeast

Tawang, May 7: Chowna Mein on May 7 proposed the creation of an integrated Buddhist tourism circuit linking major spiritual destinations across the Northeast and neighbouring countries, suggesting that the initiative be branded as the “Tawang Initiative” to establish a distinct global identity.

Addressing the inaugural session of a workshop on the “Development of the Buddhist Circuit in Northeast India” in Tawang, Mein emphasised the need for a coordinated and professional strategy to strengthen tourism infrastructure and cultural connectivity in the region.

The workshop brought together delegates from Nepal, Bhutan, Sri Lanka and several Indian states, reflecting growing interest in expanding Buddhist and cultural tourism networks across borders.

Mein said the proposed circuit should connect prominent Buddhist destinations in Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Sikkim and Manipur while also integrating neighbouring countries to offer visitors a seamless spiritual and cultural experience.

Highlighting Tawang’s religious and historical importance, the Deputy Chief Minister noted that the region houses the 400-year-old Tawang Monastery, is the birthplace of the Sixth Dalai Lama, and forms part of a historically significant route associated with the present Dalai Lama.

He also identified places such as Dirang, Thembang, the sacred Permako region and Mechuka as important components of a larger Buddhist and cultural tourism network.

Mein further highlighted Arunachal Pradesh’s tourism potential beyond spirituality, pointing to the presence of 26 major tribes with distinct traditions, languages and attire, as well as the state’s biodiversity that supports eco-tourism, adventure tourism and wellness retreats.

He said the state government is also working to preserve intangible cultural heritage by digitising ancient manuscripts, traditional knowledge systems and religious texts for future generations.

The Deputy Chief Minister additionally announced plans for an international tourism event in Arunachal Pradesh later this year and invited global stakeholders to collaborate in promoting the state as a leading tourism destination.
