Imphal, April 27: The Coalition for Indigenes Rights Campaign (CIRCA) has strongly condemned an alleged mob assault on Mayengbam Somorjit Luwang at Ema Keithel market, describing the incident as “highly deplorable and unacceptable in a civilised society”.
According to the statement, the attack also involved two women who reportedly attempted to shield Luwang during the incident. CIRCA said the violence occurred against the backdrop of the ongoing crisis in Manipur since May 3, 2023, and highlighted that Luwang had recently participated in a rally organised by COCOMI on April 25.
The organisation stated that the incident reflects a “deeper moral degradation” in society, marked by diminishing rationality and rising mistrust. It warned that attacks on activists could weaken collective efforts to address the challenges faced by indigenous communities.
CIRCA also referred to Luwang’s personal loss, noting that his elder brother had died during the ongoing conflict. The group expressed solidarity with him and reiterated its commitment to safeguarding the rights, dignity and security of indigenous people.
In its appeal, CIRCA urged those involved in the assault to come forward and issue a public apology. It also called on community elders and civil society leaders to intervene with a reform-oriented approach to prevent further escalation.
The statement, issued by Leishangthem Lamyanba Meitei, further appealed to the public to prioritise education, strengthen economic activities and work towards building resilience amid continuing tensions in the state.
