Clashes Erupt in Manipur’s Bishnupur After Rumours, Curbs Imposed to Restore Order

Imphal, April 15: Tension escalated in Bishnupur district on April 14 after protests over the recent deadly bomb attack turned violent, leading to clashes between locals and security forces and the imposition of prohibitory orders to stabilise the situation.

The unrest unfolded in Thingungei and nearby Ningthoukhong, where residents had gathered to protest the killing of two children in the April 7 blast at Tronglaobi. The situation deteriorated rapidly following the spread of unverified rumours about the movement of individuals allegedly carrying arms, triggering panic and anger among locals.

According to officials, the confrontation began around 1:30 pm when a security team was blocked by a group of residents near Thingungei. The crowd, reportedly reacting to misinformation, stopped security vehicles, and the standoff soon turned violent. In the ensuing chaos, more than ten people sustained minor injuries, while at least one vehicle was set on fire.

Authorities said additional forces were deployed to bring the situation under control, and the crowd was dispersed using minimal force, including tear gas. A flag march was later conducted in the affected to reinforce security presence and prevent further escalation.

Police confirmed that four individuals have been arrested in connection with the violence, with efforts ongoing to identify others involved in arson, unlawful assembly, and obstruction of security personnel. Officials also issued a strong warning against the spread of rumours, urging the public to rely only on verified information.

In response to the unrest, the district administration imposed prohibitory orders under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita (BNSS) from 5 pm onwards, restricting public movement in the affected areas until further notice.
