Colombia Storm Into World Cup Knockouts With Win Over DR Congo

Sports Desk: Colombia became one of the first teams to secure a place in the FIFA World Cup 2026 knockout stage after edging past DR Congo 1-0 in a hard-fought Group K encounter on Tuesday night. After dominating possession and creating several scoring opportunities, Colombia finally broke the deadlock in the 76th minute when defender Daniel Muñoz found the net with a low shot that took a slight deflection on its way past goalkeeper Lionel Mpasi. Mpasi had earlier produced a string of impressive saves to keep the African side in contention.

The victory gave Colombia six points from two matches, following their opening 3-1 win over Uzbekistan, and guaranteed their progression to the Round of 32 with a game to spare. They now sit atop Group K ahead of their final group-stage clash against Portugal. Despite the defeat, DR Congo put up a spirited performance and remained competitive throughout the contest. The result, however, leaves them needing a positive outcome in their final group match against Uzbekistan to keep their hopes of advancing alive.

Colombia coach Néstor Lorenzo praised his team’s composure and attacking variety after the match, saying the squad continues to improve as the tournament progresses.  With their place in the knockout rounds secured, Colombia will now look to maintain their momentum and finish as Group K winners.
