Congress to Review UCC Bill Before Taking Stand, Says MLA Nurul Huda

Guwahati, May 25: Nurul Huda on Monday said the Congress party would examine the provisions of the proposed Uniform Civil Code (UCC) Bill before deciding its position, adding that the party would oppose the legislation if it found any provisions conflicting with religious practices, particularly Islam.

Speaking to reporters in Guwahati, Huda stated that the party intended to study the contents of the Bill after it is introduced in the Assam Legislative Assembly before taking a final stand.

“We will take a look at what the Bill is, and if it is against religions, Islam, we will protest against it,” he said.

The Congress legislator also commented on the recent rise in fuel prices and alleged that the increases were implemented after elections to benefit oil companies. He claimed that fuel prices had been witnessing frequent upward revisions.

“It is increasing each day. The government had decided to hike the prices after the elections, for the benefit of the oil companies. The companies are working hand in glove with the government,” Huda alleged.

The remarks come amid ongoing political discussions over the proposed UCC legislation in Assam and concerns raised by opposition parties regarding recent fuel price increases.
