CoTU Calls 24-Hour Shutdown in Manipur’s Kangpokpi Over Security Concerns

KANGPOKPI, Oct 10: The Committee on Tribal Unity (CoTU) has called a 24-hour total shutdown across Manipur’s Kangpokpi district from 6 pm, citing security concerns following reported attacks in Chassad in Kamjong district, Yaolen in Ukhrul district and along the IT Road in Kangpokpi.

In its shutdown notice, CoTU alleged that the attacks involved Tangkhul and Liangmei elements associated with the NSCN-IM. The allegations have not been independently verified.

The organisation said the incidents threatened civilian safety and security and raised concerns about possible further attacks in other vulnerable areas. It condemned what it described as violence and intimidation against civilians and urged the administration to take immediate steps to protect vulnerable communities and prevent further escalation.

CoTU appealed to residents, business establishments and transport operators to observe the shutdown and cooperate with the call. Emergency medical services and other essential life-saving services will remain exempted, according to the notice.

The organisation also urged the public to remain vigilant, maintain peace and avoid actions that could aggravate the situation.

The shutdown notice was issued by CoTU’s Information and Publicity Wing, citing public safety and civilian protection.
