Sports Desk: India’s women’s cricket team’s Asian Games gold-medal triumph has given all-rounder Deepti Sharma another target to chase — an Olympic gold medal. Deepti played a key role in India’s commanding 147-run victory over Sri Lanka in the gold-medal match at the Aichi-Nagoya Asian Games. After India posted 216/3, the off-spinner returned figures of 3/6 from four overs, including a maiden, as Sri Lanka were bowled out for just 69. Speaking to MyKhel after the final, Deepti said India had prepared well and were improving as a team with every match. She described the Asian Games gold as particularly significant as it was India’s first gold medal at the 2026 Games.

The experienced all-rounder also expressed hope that India could carry the momentum into the Olympics and compete for the top prize there. Deepti said her focus remains on contributing in all three departments rather than concentrating on individual statistics. Whether batting, bowling or fielding, she said her priority is to help the team overcome difficult situations and win matches. She also credited the entire bowling unit for its performance in the final. Despite the batting-friendly conditions, India’s bowlers executed their plans effectively to restrict Sri Lanka to a modest total.
Deepti’s three-wicket haul included the dismissal of Sri Lankan captain Chamari Athapaththu, along with Kavisha Dilhari and Sugandika Kumari. The performance added to an impressive year for Deepti. According to MyKhel, she has taken 37 wickets in 24 T20 internationals in 2026 at an average of 14.78. She is also the leading wicket-taker in women’s T20I cricket history, with 189 wickets from 157 matches. India’s Asian Games victory marked their second consecutive women’s cricket gold at the continental event, following their triumph in 2023.
