DHUBRI: A couple was allegedly attacked with a sharp weapon following a dispute over a passage in Dhubri town’s College Nagar area, with police arresting the husband of the woman named as the prime accused.
The incident reportedly took place around 3.15 pm on August 22 in Ward 15. According to an FIR lodged by Shyam Charan Maulik, his neighbour Suprabha Sharma allegedly attacked his wife, Mami Maulik, with a sharp billhook locally known as a boti.
The complaint said Shyam Charan sustained deep cuts to his left hand and was bitten on a finger when he intervened. Mami allegedly suffered severe lacerations to her hands while trying to protect herself from an attack targeting her neck and required 15 stitches.
The victims alleged that the incident stemmed from a long-standing dispute between the neighbouring families over a passage. Shyam Charan had earlier submitted a complaint about the dispute to the Dhubri Municipal Board on July 14.
Following the FIR, Dhubri Police arrested Diganta Sharma, Suprabha’s husband and an employee of the Dhubri Municipal Board. Police said efforts were underway to trace Suprabha, who was reportedly absconding.
Police have initiated an investigation and are taking legal action under relevant provisions of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS).
