DoNER Explores Eri Silk–Kota Doria Collaboration to Develop Premium Handloom Fabric

Guwahati, May 18: The Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region is exploring the possibility of combining Eri silk, widely known as “peace silk” for its eco-friendly and ethical production process, with Kota Doria to create a premium handloom fabric aimed at domestic and international markets.

Officials said the proposed initiative is expected to generate livelihood opportunities for weavers and artisans from both the northeastern region and Rajasthan while strengthening the global presence of Indian handloom products.

As part of the initiative, DoNER Secretary Sanjay Jaju visited the Common Facility Centre at Kaithoon in Kota on May 17 along with Kota District Collector Piyush Samaria and Managing Director of the North Eastern Handicrafts and Handlooms Development Corporation, Mara Kocho.

During the visit, the delegation interacted with weavers, artisans and fashion designers and observed traditional Kota Doria weaving methods, which are recognised for their lightweight texture, transparent weave and distinctive check patterns.

Discussions focused on the feasibility of integrating Eri silk from the Northeast with Kota Doria to create a high-value textile product combining comfort, durability and traditional craftsmanship.

The delegation also met Om Birla in Kota, who said the proposed collaboration could unite two distinctive handloom traditions while creating new economic opportunities for weaving communities.

Officials said preparations are currently underway for signing a memorandum of understanding between NEHHDC and Rajasthan’s District Industries Centre to support cooperation in areas such as product development, skill enhancement, branding and market connectivity.
