Family Appeals for Calm Amid Legal Proceedings Linked to Zubeen Garg’s Death

Guwahati, April 23: Amid ongoing legal proceedings connected to the death of Assamese music icon Zubeen Garg, Anita Deka Mahanta, wife of Shyamkanu Mahanta, has urged the public to remain calm and avoid hostility.

Addressing the media, Anita appealed to people across Assam to refrain from anger and calls for violence directed at her husband. With folded hands, she called for restraint and dignity, stating that her family wishes to rebuild its life peacefully.

She said Shyamkanu Mahanta has been deeply affected by the singer’s passing, describing it as a personal loss for him as well.

Responding to allegations linked to the case, Anita denied claims that her husband had supplied alcohol to the late artist or coerced him into travelling abroad. She maintained that there is no evidence to support such accusations.

Emphasising the importance of due process, she said the matter should be decided strictly on the basis of evidence and urged against extreme reactions, including calls for violence or capital punishment.

She also highlighted that their professional engagements with the late singer were conducted with mutual understanding, adding that decisions regarding events were taken in consultation with him.

Describing the incident as deeply unfortunate, Anita refrained from assigning blame and called for a more constructive public response in the aftermath of the loss.

Meanwhile, the bail hearing of Shyamkanu Mahanta has concluded, with the court expected to deliver its verdict shortly.
