Congress MP Gaurav Gogoi criticised the condition of national highways in Assam following a fatal road accident near Guwahati that killed six people, accusing the BJP government of collecting tolls while failing to provide safe roads.
In a post on X on August 31, Gogoi said the condition of national highways in Assam, particularly the Guwahati-Tinsukia stretch, was poor. He alleged that taxpayers’ money was being wasted through a “minister-contractor nexus”.
His remarks came after a passenger-carrying commercial vehicle collided head-on with a truck at Khetri Nalgedra on the outskirts of Guwahati on August 30, killing six people and injuring three others.
According to preliminary information, the vehicle was heading towards Guwahati when its driver reportedly lost control, crossed the highway divider and crashed into an oncoming truck. The accident disrupted traffic on NH-27, while local residents staged a protest and raised concerns over road safety and the condition of the highway.
Police are continuing their investigation to determine the circumstances that led to the collision.
