Guwahati: In a move aimed at reducing traffic congestion and ensuring the smooth movement of vehicles, the Guwahati Police have imposed a complete ban on processions, rallies, marathons, walkathons, and similar gatherings within city limits.
The order, issued by Deputy Commissioner of Police (Administration) Imdad Ali, APS, under Section 163 of the Bharatiya Nagarik Suraksha Sanhita, 2023, came into force with immediate effect.

Citing the frequent chaos caused by large gatherings on busy city roads, the police stressed that such events often result in long snarls, inconvenience to commuters, and delays in emergency services. “It is essential to manage road usage efficiently for the smooth flow of traffic in Guwahati,” the order stated.
Officials also flagged concerns over public safety, noting that overcrowding during rallies and processions poses risks for both regular commuters and emergency responders.

The directive further warns that any violation will attract punishment under Section 223 of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, 2023. However, the order leaves room for appeal—individuals or groups affected by the restriction may submit written objections to seek its cancellation or modification.
The announcement has already sparked debate, with some residents welcoming the step as a long-pending measure to decongest city roads, while others view it as a curtailment of democratic spaces for protest and public expression.
