Heavy rainfall floods Guwahati; minister urges caution after woman’s death

Guwahati, April 21: Widespread waterlogging triggered by intense rainfall has disrupted normal life across Guwahati, prompting Assam Minister Jayanta Malla Baruah to call for public awareness and cooperation.

In a statement, the minister said “unprecedented rainfall” from evening till late night inundated several parts of the city, affecting mobility and daily activities. He added that authorities are working round the clock to manage the situation and urged residents to remain cautious.

The India Meteorological Department has forecast continued rainfall across Assam over the next few days, with thunderstorms, lightning and gusty winds likely in multiple districts. Officials attributed the prevailing conditions to upper air cyclonic circulations over northeast Assam and adjoining areas, as well as neighbouring Bangladesh.

The Assam State Disaster Management Authority has warned of possible urban flooding, traffic disruptions and localised landslides in vulnerable zones due to the ongoing wet spell.

Rainfall data indicated severe precipitation levels, with Khanapara recording over 215 mm in 24 hours, while areas around Gauhati University received more than 100 mm.

Amid the deteriorating situation, a woman, Payel Nath, died after falling into an open roadside drain on the night of April 19. Rescue teams from Guwahati City Police and the State Disaster Response Force (SDRF) recovered her body around 150 metres from the spot after a prolonged search operation.

Authorities have advised residents to remain vigilant as adverse weather conditions are expected to persist.
