Himanta Biswa Sarma Likely to Resign as Assam CM Today, Paving Way for New Government Formation

Guwahati, May 6: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is expected to meet Governor Lakshman Prasad Acharya on May 6 to submit his resignation, initiating the formal process for the formation of a new government after the NDA’s decisive electoral victory.

Speaking to reporters, Sarma said he would call on the Governor once the official election results are submitted. Officials indicated that the Chief Electoral Officer is likely to present the final results to the Governor later in the day, following which the resignation will be tendered.

The National Democratic Alliance has secured a commanding mandate, winning 102 seats in the 126-member Assam Legislative Assembly. The Bharatiya Janata Party emerged as the dominant force with 82 seats, while its allies—the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front—won 10 seats each.

Sarma, who led the alliance into the elections as its chief ministerial face, said the resignation would facilitate the constitutional process for forming the next government. He added that a meeting of newly elected BJP legislators would be convened under the supervision of central observer Jagat Prakash Nadda and co-observer Baijayant Panda to elect the leader of the Legislature Party.

He noted that the government formation process would commence immediately thereafter and is expected to be completed shortly.

On the opposition front, Sarma pointed out that the Indian National Congress, despite emerging as the largest opposition party with 19 MLAs, may fall short of the required strength to claim the post of Leader of the Opposition. He indicated that while parties would appoint their legislative leaders, the Assembly may function without a formally recognised LoP under existing norms.
