Himanta Biswa Sarma Says NDA’s 102-Seat Mandate Increases Government’s Responsibility in Assam

Guwahati, May 15: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma on May 15 said the BJP-led NDA government’s responsibility has increased significantly after securing 102 seats in the recently concluded Assam Assembly elections, asserting that the administration would work with greater commitment to fulfil all promises made in its election manifesto.

Addressing a gathering at Batadrava Than in Nagaon district, Sarma said the government would intensify development initiatives across the state, with special focus on Batadrava.

“Responsibility will increase after getting 102 seats. This time we will work harder so that Assam can develop,” the Chief Minister said.

He noted that the government’s governance approach has evolved since the COVID-19 pandemic period and said the manifesto prepared during the 2021 elections had been shaped by the uncertainties of the pandemic.

“When I brought our election manifesto in 2021, the COVID pandemic was in front of us and our pledges were limited. This time we have made broader commitments and I am confident we will implement them,” he said.

Sarma reiterated several major promises made by the government, including implementation of the Uniform Civil Code excluding Sixth Schedule and Scheduled Tribe areas, generation of two lakh jobs, expansion of healthcare infrastructure, major investments in flood management and wider infrastructure development across Assam.

The Chief Minister also said that since taking oath for his second consecutive term on May 12, he had not attended any official programme outside Guwahati before visiting Batadrava Than, the birthplace of Srimanta Sankardeva.

“When I go outside Guwahati, I feel a sense of responsibility. I will try to take Assam forward by following the path shown by the Gurujona,” he said.

Sarma said he offered prayers at the shrine and reaffirmed the government’s commitment to the ideals and teachings of Srimanta Sankardeva, emphasising harmony and spiritual values in governance.

“Mahapurush Srimanta Sankardeva envisioned an Assam where different communities live in harmony. Our government will work following that path,” he added.

The Chief Minister further stated that development of Batadrava Than would remain a priority for the government and said discussions were already underway with the temple management committee regarding multiple developmental projects.

He also reviewed several initiatives being pursued under the state government’s “Vikas and Virasat” agenda, including 24×7 power supply, the Maa Kamakhya Corridor project and investment-related proposals linked to Advantage Assam 2.0.

The BJP-led NDA returned to power in Assam for a third consecutive term after winning 102 seats in the Assembly elections. The new government was sworn in on May 12 in the presence of Prime Minister Narendra Modi and senior NDA leaders.
