Guwahati, May 20: Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma visited Zubeen Kshetra near Guwahati soon after taking oath for his second term in office, making it his first visit to the cultural site dedicated to renowned Assamese musician Zubeen Garg.
During the visit, the Chief Minister paid tribute to the artist and acknowledged his contributions to Assam’s cultural and musical landscape. The visit carried symbolic significance as it took place shortly after the swearing-in ceremony.
Sarma also inspected the ongoing construction of Zubeen Kshetra, a permanent memorial and cultural complex being developed to honour the singer’s legacy. The project has been envisioned as a space dedicated to preserving and celebrating Zubeen Garg’s influence on Assamese music, culture and society.
Officials present at the site briefed the Chief Minister on the progress of the construction work and outlined future development plans linked to the project. Discussions were also held regarding the infrastructure and facilities proposed for the memorial.
The Chief Minister said the initiative aims to create a dedicated cultural centre that reflects the artistic journey and legacy of Zubeen Garg while also serving as a platform to promote Assamese cultural identity.
Located in Sonapur on the outskirts of Guwahati, the memorial project is being developed as a tribute to one of Assam’s most influential contemporary cultural figures.
