Bongaigaon, May 16: In a significant crackdown on suspected interstate smuggling operations, the Government Railway Police (GRP) in Assam’s Bongaigaon recovered a large consignment of illegal gold bars valued at nearly Rs 3 crore from the Delhi–Tripura bound Sampark Kranti Express.
According to police sources, the operation was carried out following specific intelligence inputs indicating that a consignment of smuggled gold was being transported through the railway network. Acting on the information, GRP personnel launched a search operation on the train while it was passing through Bongaigaon district.
During the course of the search, officials reportedly observed suspicious behaviour from a passenger, prompting them to conduct further checks. A detailed inspection of the passenger’s luggage led to the recovery of a substantial quantity of gold bars allegedly concealed inside a bag.
The individual was identified as Prabin Singha Rao and was taken into custody for questioning. He is currently being held at the Bongaigaon GRP police station as investigators continue to examine his possible role in the case.
Police said efforts are underway to determine the origin and intended destination of the seized gold consignment. Investigators are also working to identify any other individuals who may be connected to the alleged interstate smuggling network.
The recovery of gold worth nearly Rs 3 crore has drawn significant attention, with officials suspecting the possible involvement of a larger organised smuggling syndicate operating across states.
