Kamrup Imposes Ban on River Activities Amid Rising Brahmaputra Water Levels

Guwahati, June 4: In response to rising water levels in the Brahmaputra and its tributaries following continuous monsoon rainfall, the Kamrup district administration has imposed a blanket prohibition on all water-related activities to prevent accidents and ensure public safety.

District Magistrate Deba Kumar Mishra issued the order under Section 30 of the Disaster Management Act, 2005, citing increased risks of strong currents, sudden surges in river levels, bank erosion and submerged hazards during the ongoing monsoon season.

The directive has been issued in view of repeated incidents of drowning and other water-related accidents reported during this period. The administration noted that the Brahmaputra and its tributaries are currently flowing at elevated levels due to persistent rainfall.

As per the order, bathing, swimming, diving, or entering any river waters within Kamrup district has been strictly prohibited until further notice. The public has also been instructed to avoid any activity that could endanger life or lead to water-related accidents.

Police, revenue officials, disaster response teams and other concerned agencies have been directed to intensify surveillance at vulnerable river ghats and enforce the restrictions strictly.

Authorities have warned that any violation of the order will invite action under the Disaster Management Act, 2005, along with other applicable legal provisions. Residents have been urged to remain cautious and cooperate with the administration to prevent loss of life during the monsoon period.
