Kokrajhar, May 24: In a major crackdown on narcotics trafficking, Kokrajhar Police seized 30,000 bottles of illicit Codeine syrup during a naka checking operation at Gossaigaon in Assam’s Kokrajhar district on May 23.
According to officials, the massive consignment was recovered from a truck transporting cattle feed that was intercepted during routine checking at a police checkpoint. During a detailed inspection of the vehicle, police allegedly discovered the illegal Codeine syrup concealed inside the truck.
The driver of the vehicle was taken into custody immediately, while investigators launched further inquiries to identify and trace the larger network suspected to be involved in the smuggling operation.
Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma appreciated the police team for the successful interception and commended their vigilance in carrying out anti-narcotics operations. Reaffirming the state government’s stand against drug trafficking, he said efforts to dismantle narcotics networks across Assam would continue.
The latest seizure comes amid intensified anti-drug operations being carried out by Assam Police in different parts of the state. Enforcement agencies have expanded intelligence-based raids, naka checking, border monitoring and coordination with other agencies to disrupt the movement of illegal substances through Assam, which investigators believe is frequently used as a transit route by trafficking syndicates in the Northeast.
The seizure follows another anti-narcotics operation conducted a day earlier in southern Assam, where Cachar Police intercepted a mechanised boat on the Barak River near Lakhipur and recovered 10,000 Yaba tablets along with 21 grams of heroin. Two people were arrested in that case.
Investigators believe traffickers are increasingly attempting to use alternative channels, including river routes and remote transit points, to move illegal substances. Officials said continued operations in recent weeks have resulted in multiple seizures involving heroin, Yaba tablets, Codeine syrup and other prohibited substances, alongside the arrest of several suspected traffickers.
The Assam government has repeatedly maintained that combating the drug trade remains a key priority, with sustained operations continuing across the state to dismantle organised narcotics networks.
