Vehicular movement along the Jatinga–Harangajao section of National Highway 27 in Assam’s Dima Hasao district came to a complete standstill on Sunday after a major landslide, triggered by incessant rainfall, struck the Jatinga area.
The collapse of a large portion of the hillside sent mud and debris cascading onto the highway, burying a substantial stretch of the road and disrupting traffic. The incident left hundreds of vehicles, including passenger buses and trucks carrying goods, stranded on both sides of the affected route.
The disruption resulted in a severe traffic congestion, with commuters and travellers forced to remain stranded for several hours amid adverse weather conditions.
Following the incident, officials from the concerned departments and the district administration rushed to the site and initiated clearance operations to remove the debris and restore road connectivity. However, persistent rain and unstable terrain have hampered efforts to reopen the highway.
The district administration has advised residents and travellers to refrain from undertaking non-essential journeys along the Jatinga–Harangajao stretch until traffic movement returns to normal.
Authorities said debris removal operations are in progress and the situation is being continuously monitored to facilitate the earliest possible restoration of traffic on the crucial highway.
