Udalguri-Sonitpur, August 15: Lokanayak Omeo Kumar Das College celebrated the 80th Independence Day with a three-day programme that concluded on Saturday with Principal Dr Sukdev Adhikari hoisting the National Flag on the college campus.

The celebrations began on August 13 with a Tiranga Jatra organised by the NCC, NSS, Red Ribbon Club and Students’ Union. August 14 was dedicated to the singing of Vande Mataram and Partition remembrance.

On Independence Day, NCC cadets assembled early in the morning for the flag-hoisting ceremony. Dr Adhikari was escorted to the flag mast by pilots, while a gun drill was also conducted as part of the parade. He hoisted the Tricolour in the presence of teaching and non-teaching staff, hostel boarders, students and ex-cadets, assisted by ANOs Captain Dr Jyotshna Baruah, Lieutenant Dr Pitambar Sedai and UO Ainus Lohar.

The National Anthem was sung across the campus following the flag-hoisting. In his address, Dr Adhikari highlighted the significance of Independence Day and urged students to contribute towards the goal of a Viksit Bharat by 2047. Captain Dr Jyotshna Baruah highlighted the sacrifices of freedom fighters and called upon cadets and students to contribute to nation-building through honest and sincere efforts.

The cadets later participated in the centrally organised Independence Day function at Bhotpara Stadium. They took part in two marching contingents during the march-past, alongside police personnel, while the St Ursula School band performed during the ceremonial parade.

The college’s celebrations were supervised by ANO Captain Dr Jyotshna Baruah and Lieutenant Dr Pitambar Sedai, with support from NSS Programme Officer Dr Manoranjan Baruah and Red Ribbon Club Programme Officer Md Saiful Islam.
