Guwahati, April 16: A man sustained critical injuries after being allegedly stabbed while trying to prevent a burglary in Guwahati’s Lachit Nagar area in the early hours of April 16, officials said.
The incident took place around 4:30 am at a local namghar, where the accused had reportedly entered with the intention of stealing iron grills. According to residents, a woman from the neighbourhood first noticed the suspect behaving suspiciously while stepping out to dispose of garbage. She allegedly saw him jump into the namghar compound and throw out a grill, prompting suspicion of a theft attempt.
The woman raised an alarm, drawing the attention of nearby residents. As people gathered at the scene, the accused attempted to flee, triggering a chase by locals.
During the pursuit, the suspect allegedly pushed the namghar priest and attacked a resident, identified as Rohit Das, with a sharp weapon when he intervened. Das suffered multiple stab injuries in the assault.
He was rushed to Nemcare Hospital, where he is undergoing treatment in the intensive care unit. Hospital sources said his condition remains critical.
