Meghalaya to Launch Six Highway Projects Worth Rs 3,214 Crore to Boost Connectivity

Meghalaya is set for a major infrastructure push with the launch of six highway projects worth Rs 3,214 crore, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma announced on June 15.

The projects, which include four new National Highway developments and the upgradation of two existing stretches, will be formally launched during the North East Infrastructure Summit in New Shillong on June 15. Union Minister for Road Transport and Highways Nitin Gadkari is scheduled to attend the event.

Among the new projects is the 7.76-km Pynursla Bypass on National Highway-206, estimated to cost Rs 564 crore. The 31.5-km Dhubri-Phulbari Bridge-Selsella Road on NH-127B will be developed at an estimated cost of Rs 737 crore, while the 31.7-km Selsella-Goeragre Road on NH-206 will involve an investment of Rs 504 crore. Another key project is the 29-km Tura Bypass on NH-217, which has been approved at a cost of Rs 951 crore.

The package also includes the upgradation of two existing road stretches. The 10.67-km Shillong-Dawki Road will be upgraded at a cost of Rs 351 crore, while the 5.44-km Jowai Bypass will undergo improvement works worth Rs 106 crore.

Announcing the projects, Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma said the initiatives would provide a major boost to connectivity and contribute to the state’s economic development.

According to officials, the projects are expected to strengthen inter-district and interstate connectivity, improve transportation infrastructure and facilitate trade, tourism and other economic activities across Meghalaya.

The investment is being regarded as one of the largest road infrastructure packages for the state in recent years and is expected to enhance travel efficiency and promote greater regional integration in the Northeast.
