Shillong is set to play a central role in Meghalaya’s next phase of tourism expansion, with the state government unveiling an ambitious master plan for New Shillong that includes a proposed Rs 450-crore monolith tower expected to become India’s second-tallest public monument after the Statue of Unity.
The proposal was presented during a state-level consultative workshop on developing world-class tourist destinations, organised by the Department of Tourism in Shillong on June 17.
At the heart of the plan is a 123-metre-tall iconic tower designed to serve as the focal point of a broader tourism ecosystem. The project is expected to feature a skywalk, immersive galleries, restaurants, cafeterias, souvenir shops and a range of recreational facilities aimed at attracting both domestic and international visitors.
The proposed tourism hub will also include a luxury resort, a luxury hotel, a convention centre, an event ground and connectivity with the upcoming football stadium. In addition, plans are being developed for a public park, an amusement park and a Meghalaya-themed cultural park that will showcase the state’s traditions, heritage and indigenous sports.
Tourism Minister Timothy D. Shira described the initiative as a significant milestone in Meghalaya’s tourism development strategy. He announced the formation of a dedicated Destination Management Organisation (DMO), which will be tasked with overseeing tourism growth, coordinating efforts among departments and ensuring accountability in project implementation.
Highlighting the importance of responsible development, Shira said tourism growth must complement environmental conservation and cultural preservation. He emphasised that the sector should contribute to strengthening the state’s identity rather than compromising it.
Commissioner and Secretary of Tourism Rosetta Mary Kurbah said Meghalaya is looking to build on its annual tourist footfall of around 18 lakh visitors by attracting more international travellers and encouraging tourists to spend longer periods in the state.
She underlined the need for stronger infrastructure, including better connectivity, dependable water and power supply, effective congestion management and destination beautification initiatives. Kurbah also stressed the importance of expanding hospitality facilities while ensuring that local traditions, customs and cultural elements remain integrated into tourism infrastructure.
The workshop further reviewed plans to develop Umiam into a world-class tourism destination. Discussions focused on improving infrastructure, strengthening environmental management practices and enhancing connectivity to support sustainable tourism growth.
Officials said consultations with stakeholders will continue as the government prepares a detailed roadmap aimed at establishing New Shillong as a flagship tourism destination and leveraging tourism as a key driver of economic growth in Meghalaya.
