Mizoram CM Lalduhoma Flags Rising Burden of Myanmar Refugees Amid Continued Influx

Aizawl, June 4: Mizoram Chief Minister Lalduhoma on June 4 said the continued arrival of displaced persons from Myanmar has become a significant burden on the state, warning that more refugees are likely to cross over in the coming months due to the prevailing situation in the neighbouring country.

Speaking in Shillong, Lalduhoma noted that the ongoing geopolitical instability in Myanmar has resulted in a steady inflow of people seeking shelter in Mizoram.

“Due to the geopolitical condition there, we are getting many displaced people nowadays. It’s likely that we will get more people seeking safety. This has become a burden for us,” the Chief Minister said.

Mizoram shares a porous international border with Myanmar and has longstanding ethnic and cultural linkages with communities across the frontier. Following political unrest and armed conflict in Myanmar, the state has been hosting thousands of refugees who have crossed over in search of safety.

The Chief Minister’s remarks highlight growing concerns over the humanitarian, administrative and financial pressures arising from the prolonged refugee situation. State authorities have repeatedly pointed to strains on local infrastructure, resources and welfare systems due to the continuing influx.

Despite these challenges, Mizoram has continued to extend humanitarian assistance and shelter to displaced persons, citing historical and ethnic ties between communities on both sides of the border.

Lalduhoma’s statement is expected to intensify calls for greater central support and coordinated policy measures to manage the refugee situation while easing the burden on the state.
