Chennai: Chennai Super Kings (CSK) are yet to receive a decision from MS Dhoni on whether the former India captain will return as a player in the Indian Premier League (IPL) 2027, keeping fans and the franchise in suspense. CSK CEO Kasi Viswanathan has confirmed that Dhoni has not informed the franchise that he intends to retire from the IPL. Responding to speculation over the 45-year-old’s future, Viswanathan said, “Dhoni hasn’t yet said he won’t play. So let’s wait.” Dhoni missed the entire IPL 2026 season because of injury, marking the first time in his long IPL career that he did not feature in a single match for CSK. His absence came as the five-time champions struggled during the season and finished eighth.

The uncertainty over Dhoni’s playing future has intensified following the end of Stephen Fleming’s 18-year association with CSK. The franchise is now preparing for a new coaching setup ahead of IPL 2027, with several candidates reportedly under consideration. However, CSK appears keen to retain Dhoni’s association with the franchise regardless of whether he continues playing. Viswanathan said the team would always want the legendary cricketer to remain a “permanent fixture” at CSK in whatever capacity he chooses, including as a player, coach or mentor. For now, Dhoni’s IPL 2027 plans remain undecided. The final call rests with the former India skipper, while CSK wait for clarity before shaping their plans for the next season.
