Naga Village Guard Killed in Ambush in Manipur’s Ukhrul District Amid Ongoing Tensions

Imphal, April 24: A 29-year-old member of the Naga Village Guards was killed in an ambush allegedly carried out by suspected Kuki armed cadres in Ukhrul district in the early hours of Friday, April 24, underscoring continuing security concerns in the region.

The deceased, identified as Horshokmi Jamang from Chatric Khullen village in Kamjong district, was attacked near Sinakeithei village while on patrol duty, according to a statement issued by the Tangkhul Naga Long.

The organisation said the ambush took place along the Sirarakhong–Sinakeithei stretch, an area that has witnessed sustained tension and armed movement in recent weeks. Members of the Naga Village Guards stationed near Sirarakhong had reportedly set out on a routine patrol when they were targeted by suspected Kuki militants, including those allegedly operating under Suspension of Operations arrangements, along with other armed groups.

Jamang was killed on the spot during the attack. The organisation described the incident as part of a broader pattern of disruption linked to the presence and movement of armed groups in the area.

In its statement, the Tangkhul Naga Long said the victim had been actively involved in safeguarding his village and surrounding areas, and described his death as a loss sustained while defending local land and community interests.

The organisation extended condolences to the bereaved family and reiterated concerns over the prevailing security situation, pointing to repeated incidents affecting civilian movement and village-level defence patrols.

Areas across Ukhrul and adjoining districts have remained sensitive, with intermittent tensions involving multiple armed groups continuing to affect normal life and security conditions.
