Nagaland Report Highlights Wide Income Inequality

Kohima, May 8: A newly released government report revealed significant income inequality in Nagaland, with the bottom 50 per cent of households receiving only 18 per cent of the state’s total income, while the top 5 per cent accounted for nearly 21 per cent.

The report, released by Sentiyanger Imchen on May 7, stated that households in the top 5 per cent income bracket earned an average monthly income of Rs 71,028, compared to Rs 1,639 earned by households in the bottom 50 per cent. Nagaland’s Gini coefficient was recorded at 0.46.

Prepared under the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s statistical strengthening programme in collaboration with the University of Hyderabad, the study surveyed 4,396 households between October and December 2024.

The report found that urban areas recorded a higher Gini coefficient of 0.44, compared to 0.42 in rural areas. Longleng reported the highest income disparity at 0.492, while Phek recorded the lowest at 0.366.

Officials said the findings are expected to support future policy measures aimed at reducing economic inequality in the state.
