Nagaon, June 5: A police crackdown has been launched in Assam’s Nagaon district after a community-led anti-drug drive in Herapati village reportedly escalated into vandalism and alleged looting, prompting authorities to detain five individuals.
According to reports, residents of Herapati carried out an operation targeting suspected drug peddlers and users in the village. During the incident, at least eight houses were allegedly vandalised, while furniture and household belongings were damaged and set on fire.
However, serious allegations have since emerged that some individuals involved in the drive went beyond targeting suspected drug-related properties and allegedly looted cash, gold ornaments and other valuables from several homes.
Local residents told media outlets that some participants were carrying knives and other sharp weapons, creating panic in the area. They also claimed that neighbouring villagers attempted to intervene but were unable to control the situation as the unrest spread.
Residents further stated that one of the suspected drug-linked individuals no longer resides in the village and is currently living in the Chalchali area of Nagaon, although his family home remains in Herapati.
Taking cognisance of the incident, Nagaon Police detained five persons on June 4 for allegedly taking the law into their own hands. An investigation has been launched into the incidents of vandalism, arson and alleged looting.
Authorities have urged the public to avoid vigilantism and stressed that action against drug-related activities must be carried out strictly through legal procedures. Further investigation is underway.
