Shillong, May 31: More than 5,400 employment opportunities are expected to be generated in Meghalaya as the state prepares to host the 39th National Games in 2027, highlighting the economic benefits of the largest sporting event ever organised in the state.
Officials said over 10,000 athletes are expected to participate in the Games, which will be held across Shillong, Tura and Jowai. The event is likely to bring a substantial influx of athletes, officials, support staff and spectators, boosting demand in sectors such as hospitality, transport, tourism, construction, catering and event management.
The National Games are also expected to strengthen Meghalaya’s reputation as an emerging sports destination. The state has invested significantly in sports infrastructure in recent years and has hosted several national-level competitions as part of its efforts to build a sustainable sports ecosystem.
Addressing a gathering in Shillong, Union Sports Minister Mansukh Mandaviya said the sports infrastructure being developed would not only benefit athletes but also contribute to tourism growth and employment generation. He added that world-class facilities would enhance Meghalaya’s ability to host major national and international sporting events in the future.
Chief Minister Conrad Sangma said the Games would create new opportunities for young people while advancing the state’s long-term goal of becoming a sports hub. He noted that investments made over the past eight years were beginning to yield results and would help nurture future generations of athletes.
The 2027 National Games will coincide with Meghalaya’s 55th Statehood year, adding symbolic significance to the event. The Games will also feature participation from other Northeastern states, which will host selected disciplines within their territories, showcasing the region’s collective sporting potential.
Officials believe the National Games will serve not only as a major sporting event but also as a catalyst for employment, tourism and broader economic growth across Meghalaya.
