Guwahati, May 4: Senior leaders of the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance have attributed their strong electoral performance in the 2026 Assembly elections in Assam to welfare schemes, development initiatives and sustained public outreach, as counting trends pointed towards a third consecutive term in office.
According to the Election Commission of India, the Bharatiya Janata Party was leading in 79 seats in the 126-member Assembly, while its allies — the Asom Gana Parishad and the Bodoland People’s Front — were ahead in eight and 10 seats respectively, placing the NDA firmly on course for a comfortable victory.
Finance Minister Ajanta Neog, contesting from Golaghat, said the alliance’s performance had surpassed even exit poll projections and expressed gratitude to voters for their support.
Cultural Affairs Minister Bimal Borah criticised the opposition, stating that it failed to present a coherent strategy or effectively connect with the electorate, and instead focused on what he described as minor issues.
Highlighting the government’s welfare agenda, Borah said initiatives centred on free education, women’s empowerment and targeted benefits for various communities had strengthened public trust in the ruling alliance. He added that the government’s efforts to address the needs of different sections of society contributed to the strong backing seen in the election.
The trends indicate that Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma is set to return to office, marking another significant political milestone for the BJP in the Northeast.
