Sonitpur, May 5: The BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) registered a comprehensive victory in Sonitpur district, securing all five Assembly constituencies and delivering a decisive setback to the opposition in the Assam Assembly elections. The results underline a strong electoral performance by the ruling alliance across the region.
In Dhekiajuli, BJP candidate Ashok Singhal retained the seat for a second term, defeating Congress nominee Batash Orang by a margin of 47,803 votes. Singhal secured 111,272 votes, while Orang polled 63,469 votes. In Borsola, BJP’s Ritubaran Sarmah emerged victorious against Congress candidate Ripun Bora, winning by 24,562 votes with a tally of 84,495 votes compared to Bora’s 59,933.
The alliance also performed strongly in Tezpur, where AGP candidate Prithviraj Rabha defeated Raijor Dal nominee Alok Nath by 19,950 votes, securing 79,140 votes against 59,190. In Rangapara, BJP candidate Krishna Kamal Tanti won comfortably with 80,064 votes, defeating Congress candidate Kartik Kurmi, who secured 37,312 votes, resulting in a margin of 42,732 votes. In Naduar, BJP’s Padma Hazarika retained his seat by defeating Congress candidate Sunil Chhetri by 52,916 votes, securing a total of 111,125 votes against 58,209.
Following the declaration of results, celebrations broke out among BJP and AGP supporters gathered outside Darrang College premises, with party workers raising slogans and marking the sweeping mandate with enthusiasm. The outcome cements the NDA’s dominance in Sonitpur, where it has secured all constituencies in a clean sweep.
