Kohima, May 9: Nagaland Chief Minister Neiphiu Rio on Friday expressed confidence that West Bengal would witness rapid development under the newly formed BJP government, stating that the impact of political change in the state would soon become visible.
Rio said that as the country continues to move forward, people in West Bengal would experience noticeable transformation under the new administration in the coming days.
Earlier, BJP Rajya Sabha MP Rahul Sinha described the swearing-in ceremony of Suvendu Adhikari as Chief Minister as a “historic change” for the state. He added that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and several senior national leaders were expected to attend the ceremony.
Sinha said the formation of the new government marked a major political shift in Bengal and noted that the swearing-in coincided with the birth anniversary of Rabindranath Tagore.
Adhikari, who leads the BJP legislative party in West Bengal, is set to become the first BJP leader to head the state government after the party secured a decisive mandate in the Assembly elections. The BJP won 207 seats, while the All India Trinamool Congress secured 80 seats after remaining in power for 15 years.
In the elections, Adhikari contested from Nandigram and Bhabanipur and defeated outgoing Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee in Bhabanipur by a margin of more than 15,000 votes.
Meanwhile, Union Ministers Rajnath Singh, J. P. Nadda and Dharmendra Pradhan, along with Tripura Chief Minister Manik Saha and Assam Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma, arrived in Kolkata to attend the swearing-in ceremony. Several other senior BJP leaders are also expected to be present at the event.
